According to reports, the construction company, Probisa, has taken over the contract to widen the one kilometre stretch of the Fuengirola – Mijas road, after workers from the previous company stopped work last week after claiming they have not been paid in full for several months. As reported in a previous article, approximately 40,000 vehicles use the stretch of road every day and since the works began and a bridge was removed, drivers in both directions have had to use a series of diversions. This is only expected to get worse as the high season approaches.

Fuengirola was in the Top 20 most-requested destinations in the world last year, according to a new study by the multinational hotel-booking website, Hotels.com, it was revealed last week.

As work began on Fuengirola’s much-anticipated Riverside Park (‘Parque Fluvial’) this week, the Mayor, Esperanza Oña, confirmed to SUR in English that is would be “finished before the start of the summer.”

Councillor for Sports Pedro Cuevas this week invited thenders for a six year concession of the ‘Centro Municipal de Tenis de Los Pacos’ with a minimum of 16.000 euros a year and the obligation on the winner to open a municipal tennis school.

Avenidas Acapulco and Miramar, plus Calle Rodrigo de Triana, three of the town’s busiest roads, will undergo major remodelling programmes next year, thanks to the Town Hall securing a six million euro loan from the ICO.

The long-awaited Parque Fluvial (‘Riverside Park’), which is located on the wasteland surrounding the mouth of the Fuengirola River, is to be officially opened on 10th of January according to the Town Hall.

Work has begun on the A-387 which connects Fuengirola and Mijas Pueblo in a bid to reduce congestion between the two municipalities, and to ease traffic flow onto the A-7 motorway at exit 210.

The Town Hall has confirmed that a budget has already been set for the construction of a new health centre in the Los Pacos district.

The announcement comes following rumours, many from within the Town Hall, that the project had been scrapped.

Pueblo López is the latest area to benefit from the municipal project

This town centre urbanisation is the latest area to see the arrival of a 20-strong team of Operation Services workers from the Town Hall, which is refurbished designated neighbourhoods.

An agreement signed between Fuengirola and Mijas Town Halls, the Junto de Andalucía and El Corte Inglés, means a notorious traffic hot spot on the A-387 is soon to be resolved.

The project, which will cost five million euros to complete, will include the construction of two additional lanes where La Loma connects with Avenida Clemente Díaz, one of the main arteries into Fuengirola; as well as two further roundabouts, one on each side of A-7 motorway.

This week, the Town Hall has begun a major new road resurfacing project, which aims to improve several key streets in the municipality.

The roads are to be repaired in order of priority, which has been determined by the Local Police. The 208,000 euro initiative will include the streets around Plaza del Concejo; calles Frasculeo, Monaguillo, Bombit; as well as a stretch of Avenida Clemente Díaz.

On her visit to the site this week, the Councillor for Town Planning, Ana Mula, said: “Residents in these areas have been warned beforehand about the works and they’re very happy because it’s something they’ve been demanding.”

Work has stopped on the Alzheimer’s Centre in Fuengirola due to lack of funds.

The Association of Alzeimer’s Patients Relatives in Fuengirola planned to build one of the most modern centres in Spain on a 900 square metre plot donated by the Fuengirola town hall.

The Ministry of the Environment in Madrid has given the go ahead to a 14 kilometre network network of pipes that will harness the flow of water from the treatment plant at Cerro de Águila, so that recycled water can be used to irrigate parks and golf courses in Mijas and Fuengirola.

A new roundabout which aims to improve road safety for drivers entering the town from the old N340, has been opened by the Mayor, Esperanza Oña. At the inauguration on Avenida Carvajal, the Mayor stressed the structure’s importance due to the “many accidents which have occurred in this area.”

Finland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alexander Stubb, has flown to the Costa del Sol to inaugurate the new Finland Centre in Fuengirola. The Minister was joined by the country’s Ambassador in Spain, Markku Keinanen, as well as the Mayor of Fuengirola, Esperanza Oña.

Las Isla del Sol, a leisure complex that would occupy an area of 100,000 square metres of land reclaimed by the sea, was to be the new star project in Fuengirola. However; a report in the environmental impact of the venture said it would have a negative effect on the beaches in Los Boliches. The project was then immediately removed from the new General Urban Plan which was provisionally approved last week. Despite the exclusion, the Town Hall is reluctant to give up on the project. “We’re not relinquishing La Isla del Sol, despite its withdrawal. We hope that it can become a reality in the future with some amendments,” said councillor Ana Mula.

Esperanza Oña, the Mayor of Fuengirola, has announced details of the 21 projects in Fuengirola which will receive funding from the 7.4 million euros assigned to the municipality in the state’s second ‘Plan E’. Unlike the first Plan, this time the money is not allowed to be allocated for the redevelopment of roads or town squares, but instead to be used for environmental or technological improvements; social, cultural or sports centres; and Social Services, as well as several other categories.

The vast majority of pedestrians do not even think about them, but for those with mobility problems, the curbs and slopes found on pedestrian crossings can sometimes be challenging and often insurmountable.

However these problems faced by disabled pedestrians will soon be destined to history in Fuengirola. The Town Hall has said it aspires to become, in the words of the Mayor; Esperanza Oña, “the town with the least number of architectural barriers and the most accessible in Andalucía.”

For many years the Town Hall has been eager to remove the electricity pylons in and around the residential area of Los Pacos. Thanks to a project which sees greater investment for local communities being approved towards the end of the year; this will now become a reality and the pylons are already being dismantled. About a 1,000 metres of cable are now running underground between the nearby school, Valdelecrín, and Pajares stream.

One Los Pacos resident said, “We have been petitioning for a long time to have these removed. Not only do they look really ugly but I believe it is safer to have everything of this nature below ground like they do in other areas. No-one will miss looking at these towers”

The works to renovate the old N-340 road that runs through the centre of Fuengirola are drawing to a close. It is hoped the reforms will be completely finished before the end of the year, with the majority before Christmas. With a budget of 737,000 euros, the works that are taking place on Avenida de Los Boliches, one of the town’s main traffic arteries, are of “major importance,” according to the Town Hall.
